I am a God fearing Aboriginal, South Sea Islander Australian man, whose married with seven wonderful God sent children!
My wife "Joanne" and I was introduced to each other in the early eighties by a mutual friend, as he just happened to be playing in the same rugby league team, but to cut along story... he later became my brother-in-law, (oh boy, what a small world)!
In the early days, I tried my hand at just about anything, from riding motor bikes, to horses, cows, goats and even greasy old pigs just for the fun of it!
But now as I sit back and reminisce over those funny but enjoyable days, I don't remember winning any prizes... but at the end of the day we had so much fun and that's what counts which makes you a winner!
When I got involved with alot of sporting clubs we mixed with alot of groups such as: basketball, boxing, soccer, cricket, rugby league, touch football and for a laugh we even tried out that aerial ping pong game called AFL (Australian Football League)!
In those days being invovled in sports was about having a lot of fun and not getting rich or hurt. Coming together as family and friends; supporting, encouraging and enjoying each others company on the weekends as mates!
But as time went on and family and friends pass away or just drift apart; you start to travel throughout the different towns and cities thats before you in Australia... Starting with the tall buildings of Brisbane in the south, to the great furnance stack of the Mt Isa Mines in the west and back again to the eastern coast of Townsville in the north.
We've travelled long, hard and fast to cover the many miles and states of our great nation, back to a place we call home to share our journeys to our children, for the cycle to go on!
And now, as we get a little older I still can say I love the greatest game of them all "Rugby League"... For in our own hearts and on our own lounge chairs we can still run, jump, box or out swim anybody who may try to go up against us! Whether it be in a swimming pool, boxing ring or just playing on a sporting field on the side of the road, we are still the greatest sportsperson in the world (in our own little minds)!
Because in the world of "IT" today, we still can be anybody we want to be, having the power in the plams of our hands... Sitting back in those big old lounge chairs in front of that big old television screens at home, imagining we are still playing the game we love the most before the multitudes of the world...
As we pass the drinks around "softdrinks, tea or coffee of course" to those of our family and friends who are left, enjoying and getting excited as our minds race back to the times of yester-years and our youth. We can say we are happy because we are here telling our stories!
But in saying all of that, I must give credit where credit is due... For all the sporting genes of our children just didn't come from the bloodline of my family tree, but also through the bloodline of my wife Joanne family as well!
Without being left behind she too got into the act of showing off her multi-talented skills! Too her credit, Joanne was selected to play in two Queensland teams both in the netball and softball teams... It was then that I first met Joanne, playing in a competition at a sporting ground in Caboolture, (and straying from the subject a little, the word "Caboolture" is an Aboriginal word for "carpet snake")!
Now coming back to the subject at hand, if we join or play "in or with" a team that is willing to put in the hard yards, then maybe it could bring forth the fruits you've been longing for and couldn't find!!!
For example, looking at our marriage we both agreed as we joined our hands together on the fields of life, united, plowing, sowing, toiling and watering the seeds that we've sown into the land of promise to bring forth the fruits of our labour and that we longed for!
So if this principal can work in a marriage or with two people who are different in many ways, whether it be of a cultural background or of a social nature, but being committed to a common cause of oneness... Then I believe the same principal can be used in or with people of two different up-bringings...
Why, because we have the power in the plams of our hands to choose or not choose through liberty and choice that we all were born into - "the true blue Australian way"!!!
Remembering that...
"TOGETHER WE CAN!, TOGETHER WE WILL!, & TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT!”
Through the Power of Sacrifice and...
"SHARING THE PAIN OF THE PAST & THE HOPE OF THE FUTURE"
